One of the great uses of a morning reading regimen is that you can put the book you’re reading on top of your coffee when you go inside so that no bugs land in it. Reading is fundamental.
The idea of this morning recapitulation of my thoughts that occurred to me while I’m doing my morning reading was affirmed by the practice of Deborah Martinson. She was an adjunct professor of Russian and Comparative Literature at Columbia University. I was reading her analysis of crime and punishment and learned that after every seminar she would email students a recap of what they had discussed in that seminar that day. This seems to me to be a wonderful thing to do as a teacher. If nothing else, it respects and lifts up the opinions of the students. But it also is a way to lock in the learning in the seminar for the professor.
I wish I had done this at the University of Chicago during my seminars this spring.
